How to Start a Blog: 7 Very Important things you Need
Before you start a blog, here are 7 things you need to know. Knowledge of these things will ensure that you run a very profitable blog that will make you money and fame in the days to come.
Let’s dive right in.
1. A Laptop Computer
A laptop computer is the very first requirement to start a blog online today.
While the desktop variant can be used to great effect, the truth remains that, it is bulky and not easily movable – a reality that will challenge the mobile lifestyle that is made possible when you jump into the reality/business of blogging.
If you already have one, great. However, if you do not have a laptop computer and are looking to buy one, we’ll suggest low cost, highly efficient laptop models on Amazon.
With a laptop computer in place, the next option for you is smart internet connection.
2. Internet Connection
Without good internet connection, your pretty, brand new computer is completely useless and won’t be able to access the internet.
To fix this, you’ll need to either opt in for a WiFi connection or a mobile broadband solution from the plethora of providers available in your local region.
To start with, always opt in for an unlimited plan type or choose a plan that gives you access to at least 10GB of data monthly.
The insistence on the monster data allowance is that, as a beginner, you’re going to need a ton of data in your course of learning, especially if you deploy video and other rich media.
Be prepared. However, if you’re confused, talk to the customer care unit of your proposed ISP and ask for a suggestion…they will certainly have an answer that will both excite and serve you well 🙂
3. Constant Electricity
Power would not be a challenge if you plan to blog in the continental US or at least, the civilized parts of Western Europe and North America.
However, if you’re constantly in transit – or the part of US you reside in is prone to power cuts as a result of natural disasters or accidents, we’ll advice that you opt in for a reliable solar powered generator. This will ensure that you always have power to run blogging related tasks, irrespective of the grid conditions or the local conditions of the place you are travelling to.
If you’re not very comfortable with the solar generator suggestion (or consider it a steep investment at the moment), buying a dedicated laptop power bank (from Amazon) will also brilliantly serve the (same) purpose.
The essence of recommending that you have a solar powered portable generator or power bank is to ensure that, no matter what, you do not run out of power to juice up your blogging gadgets, especially, your laptop.
On the next point…
4. A Smart Domain Name
Choosing – and actually purchasing a smart domain name is next, right after making certain of your power.
This is because, at How to Create a Blog Online, we do not advocate that you use free blogging platforms, especially with the gross lack of control these offer come with.
A good domain name can be bought from Namecheap – and depending on the extension or time of purchase, the price could range from a few cents to about $10.
Generally, a dot com extension is preferred. However, this does not mean other extensions should be taken for granted or neglected, especially if your desired dot com choice isn’t available.
This very site runs on a .online extension – and we couldn’t be (more) happier…this is so especially since it covers the very essence of what we are doing here (and the dot com wasn’t available at the time of purchase).
A final word on domain purchase: make certain that your primary keyword is somewhere in the domain name, preferably at the beginning. While this is not a very strong ranking signal, it nevertheless gives you a head start in the world of ranking – and the reality of getting (merited) favor from search engines.
5. Badass Hosting
Your hosting can either make or mar your fresh blog…
Unfortunately, very few hosting companies online today are actually doing the job of hosting sites in a manner that is commendable or worthy of our own appreciation and commendation.
For instance, uptime is a challenge to many hosting companies, so is support and page speed. Unfortunately, these factors impact your blog in a manner that will make your life very miserable in the coming days, if not got right, initially.
Finally, many sites do not offer free SSL certificates. SSL now is a standard feature that any serious hosting company offers by default – not an optional arrangement that is offered at will.
The good news is that, a certain hosting company offers incredible uptime guarantee, has great support, provides free SSL certificates and importantly, ensures speedy loading of sites hosted on their servers.
…this host is called, Hawk Host. Signing up for an account with them is as easy and as simple as ABC.
6. (Impressive) Writing Ability
The ‘how to start a blog question’ cannot be satisfactorily answered without mentioning an awesome writing ability.
This is because, writing is the currency of blogging…without good writing skills, everything falls apart – horridly.
However, if you are not naturally a great writer, you can contract others to write for you – and you pay them (handsomely, or in a pretty fashion – whichever your desire) either by the end of the month or per project.
However, kindly understand that without the ability to creatively use words – or get someone who can to write for you, you actually have no business blogging and will in the long run, harm yourself more than you are helping yourself.
It’s actually as simple as that!
7. Knowledge of SEO
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the art of courting search engines to rank your content up the SERPs so that it can be found organically.
This art, thought (wrongly) by many as unimportant is without doubt, the last skill you need to master in your journey to become a successful blogger but nevertheless, a very important one that cannot – and should not be neglected.
Mastery of SEO will ensure that you rake in organic visitors that are interested in what you are offering. These visitors are the highest converting type and are guaranteed to make the journey of blogging worth your while.
